Hail to the Kings
Big king mackerel like this are fun to catch, and there will be plenty of them in July off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. July each year means fishing for king mackerel. If you’re practicing or fishing with members of the Southern Kingfish Association, carry a coffee can with you. After running 50, 60 or 70 mph for two to four hours, you’ll need a place to store all the screws, nuts, bolts and washers that have jarred loose from the boat.

Jugheads for Flatheads
This mess of blue and channel cats was caught by Holeman while jug-fishing the Ross Barnett Reservoir. He recommends fishing stump fields and ledges where the lake bottom drops off into the original Pearl River channel. Catfish can be found on every continent in the world, with the exception of Antarctica. The catfish is probably one of the most popular fish in the nation, yet it is not even a game fish in Mississippi.

The Cobia Machine
Hamilton works the cobia in close to the boat where it can be gaffed. Thirty-five miles south of Horn Island in the Gulf of Mexico, we spotted a jack-up rig that seemed to be calling our names. As we approached it, we saw what we’d hoped — two cobia, a 40-pounder and a 10-pounder.

Child-Proof
Keith Lee launched his boat on the beautiful waters of Lake Pushmataha, and quickly headed to a favorite cove chock full of pads and bass. As Lee worked the pads with a golden shiner-colored Senko, he promptly caught his first bass. As he retrieved the Senko back to the boat through the pads and vegetation in a fast retrieve, the bass just couldn’t stand it.

The Crappie Factory
The author found shallow waters in grass among the best bets for loading up on slab white perch. Handling five to eight fishing poles with tips bent each from the weight of fish on all at the same time is some pretty good fishing action. In fact, it’s the most fever-pitched crappie action this angler has ever run into.

King of all Monarchs
Toler Robinson, Ronnie Foy and Dan Robinson pose with one of Foy’s turkeys taken on his grand-slam quest. At first light, an old battle-worn tom belted out a voluminous gobble that served as a warning to all would-be suitors and a come-hither call for any available hens.

Electronic upgrades are easier than ever
Detailed instructions guiding you through the simple process of updating the software in your fish finder or GPS unit can be found in your owner's manual or on the manufacturer's web site. Computerizing fish finders and other marine electronics has been a good news/bad news proposition.

Concealed on campus will reduce killings
The Louisiana House of Representatives recently killed a bill to allow concealed handgun carry on campuses. The following is one man’s opinion:

Is anything not biting this month?
Fishing for Spanish mackerel is popular and productive off the coast in July. Capt. Timmy Holley of Prime Tyme Charters based at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor fishes outside the barrier islands for Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, redfish and cobia and offshore for snapper.

Blacks, whites welcome on my boats
Both of these fish are white crappie, but male white crappie, second picture, can sometimes be confused with black crappie. Do you know the difference between a white crappie and a black crappie? Lots of folks don’t. During the spawn, the male white crappie turns black, and is often confused with his double-first cousin, the black crappie.

Hunt for July bass at Calling Panther
Calling Panther has some of the prettiest bass you'll ever see, and Paul Elias always expects to catch a 5-pound-plus largemouth when he fishes there. This month we’re going to 512-acre Calling Panther Lake near Crystal Springs because that’s where the big bass are in July in the deep water. The record for bass there is a little more than 13 pounds.

Underrated ‘stripes’ plentiful here
White bass are plentiful and tasty, but they’re not commonly fished for here in Mississippi. The white bass — what many call “stripes” — is Mississippi’s unsung and untapped sportfish. They are abundant where they occur, grow to good size, blast the heck out of topwaters and crankbaits, and can be darn-good eating.
