Fantastic Float Fishing
For Rocky Rowell, of Wiggins, a good bit of his time both back in 1974, and many times since, has been spent rolling on the black waters of southern Mississippi’s Leaf River. Rowell can still recall some memorable fishing trips when he and his high school buddies would float the Leaf, fishing and camping and listening to music of the day from groups like the Doobies and Uriah Heap.

Raining Cats and Dogs
Setting traps is probably the most-effective way of removing predators from your hunting land, but hunting is arguably more fun. The month of February is a wind-down time for most hunters. Small-game seasons, like squirrel, rabbit and quail are open through the end of the month, but there isn’t much else to do for the big-game hunter.

Late-Season Trophies
The author harvested this 10-point buck last year. The big deer was trailing several does when it met its demise. Lamar Arrington was along on the successful hunt. Easing along the old logging trail in the pre-dawn darkness, I was stopped in my tracks by the aromatic smell of a musty rutting buck. Sensing one was nearby, I eased down and waited for daylight.

Hot Does and Rutting Bucks
Stacey Sims’ 17-point buck won the 97 WOKK Big Buck Bounty contest held in Meridian last year. The monster buck was harvested during the rut. Stacey Sims eased along the water’s edge as he worked his way toward his deer stand. The climbing stand was positioned overlooking a flooded swamp bottom.

Youth Hunt
Anna Arrington is proud of her first rack buck, which she harvested near Chunky. In a flash, the buck charged into the herd of does and younger bucks, scattering them in all directions. The monster was furious that an immature buck had moved in on his harem.

Mississippi Hunting Camps
Uncle Frank’s Log Cabin was a labor of love for Ben Rogers, who hopes that one day his grandson will be able to inherit the land that meant so much to him and his father Frank.
As we’ve shown in past articles through the years, Mississippi hunting camps come in all makes and models, and I have been blessed to have the privilege of visiting a wide assortment, each with its own personality and intrinsic uniqueness.

May kicks off saltwater action
From his perch at Gorenflo’s, Danny Pitalo is able to keep his finger on the pulse of the saltwater action along the Mississippi Coast. Danny Pitalo of Biloxi, the owner of Gorenflo’s Tackle Shop and Marina Store and Point Cadet Fuel & Ice beside the Isle of Capri Resort and Casino, has his finger on the pulse of Mississippi saltwater fishing. Every day, anglers pull up to his marina to gas up and buy bait and tackle before fishing offshore and inshore.

Woods Wise
Many hunters mistakenly think spring plots are a waste of time because there’s so much natural greenery available to the deer.

Deer hunters who only plant fall wildlife food plots are missing half the point.
